This Morning: Joe Cole’s moving tribute to the ‘special’ Helen McCrory

Peaky Blinders fans were shocked to hear the voice of Polly Gray in episode two of the hit BBC drama on Sunday.

The emotional scene came as Tommy, played by Cillian Murphy, returned home from the US and viewers heard the voice of Helen McCrory, who passed away last year.

The line was one Polly had said before she died, and her prophetic words haunted her brother.

They are heard saying, “There will be a war in this family and one of you will die.”

Fans were quick to take to Twitter to share their thoughts on the scene, with some simply sharing an emoji of a crying face.

One user wrote: “Polly’s voice and Tommy have a seizure for the first ten minutes…”

Another said: “There’s a big gaping hole where Polly should be.”

And a third wrote: “Another epic episode from @ThePeakyBlinder loving the links and constant involvement of Aunt Polly the amazing #HelenMcCrory will surely be missed. However, I miss hearing the red right hand at the beginning!”

Viewers had been eagerly awaiting the return of the popular drama when the final series premiered last week.

The series opener attracted 3.8 million viewers, a whopping 100,000 more than the fifth series premiere in 2019.

The first episode of the final series began with the show discussing Helen’s absence as they wrote her death into the storyline.

In the opening scenes, a wagon full of bodies was delivered to Tommy’s door and he was then seen crying opening the body bags.

While Tommy was opening the bags, the scene was cut to Polly to imply that she was among the victims.

When it came to the funeral of Polly, her son – and now Tommy’s rival – Michael was heard saying: “And I swear by the devil to God Almighty, no matter what the cost, no matter how many lies I have to tell, I will Avenge Tommy Shelby.”

Before the credits rolled at the end of the first episode, an on-screen tribute read: “Dedicated to the memory of Helen McCrory OBE ‘Polly Gray'” while birds chirped in the background.

Rebecca Foster, the artist who painted the portrait featured in the episode, wrote after the episode, “It was such an honor and responsibility to paint this portrait of Helen McCrory for tonight’s episode of Peaky Blinders. I hope I did her justice. “
