For anyone who may be new to the world of “Last of Us,” the game and show follows the adventures of Joel and Ella, a smuggler and teenager struggling to survive in a foreign country. Post-apocalyptic America is crawling along with other dangerous humans, not to mention what /Film’s Ben Silverio has called “crazy zombies with mushrooms growing on their faces.”
Pedro Pascal is no stranger to this kind of scenario where he follows a child. That’s what he does in space in “The Mandalorian”, but in that case he wears a helmet most of the time and the baby looks like Baby Yoda (despite its standard name Grogu, and as far as we know, he has nothing to do with the famous Jedi Master other than being a member of the same alien species). However, in “The Last of Us”, Pascal was paired with fellow “Game of Thrones” Bella Ramsey, the breakout child actress playing Lyanna Mormont. Like “Game of Thrones” is, both of their characters on that show met with ill-timed endings, with Mormont going up against a ferocious giant in the Battle of Winterfell and Pascal’s Oberyn Martell going head to head. with the Mountain in a battle.
Hopefully Joel and Ella will fare better than they did, and that “The Last of Us” will fare better than most video game adaptations have. It benefits from Neil Druckmann, the creative director of the video game “The Last of Us”, and Craig Mazin, the creator of the wonderful HBO miniseries “Chernobyl” and a co-host Scriptnotes podcast, behind it. Pascal and Ramsey stars the likes of Diego Luna (“Terminator: Dark Fate”, “Agent of SHIELD”) and Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”, “Devs”), and The series will premiere you in 2023.
