Pensioner loses his memory after having sex with his wife after their wedding anniversary

A 66-year-old Limerick man was found to have suffered short-term memory loss after having sexual intercourse with his wife seven years after a similar incident, a report said

A new study has found that a man lost his short-term memory after having sex with his wife in the afternoon.

The 66-year-old suffered transient global amnesia within 10 minutes of having sex Irish Medical Journal report specified.

University Hospital Limerick’s Department of Neurology said the case showed sex could lead to memory loss.

The man went to the hospital to complain about the amnesia after experiencing similar symptoms seven years earlier.

The report, titled “Recurrent Postcoital Transient Amnesia Associated with Diffusion Restriction,” detailed how he lost his most recent memory over the past two days.

It states: “On the afternoon of the performance, he had intercourse 10 minutes before the onset of the memory impairment.

“After seeing the date on his phone he was distraught that he had forgotten his wedding anniversary the day before.

“In fact, the day before he had celebrated his wedding anniversary with his wife and family.

“His autobiographical memory remained intact, but he had no memory of that morning or the celebrations of the night before.”

The newspaper continued: “The man repeatedly questioned his wife and daughter about the events of that morning and the previous day.

“No other neurological symptoms were reported and upon arrival at the emergency room, his neurological exam was completely normal.”

This memory loss followed a similar experience by the same man seven years earlier when he went to the hospital, and according to doctors, this episode also occurred within 10 minutes of intercourse.

The researchers said in their report that the earlier amnesiac event occurred “with an identical postcoital onset.”

Transient global amnesia has historically been associated with migraines or exercise. Likewise, it can be caused by hot or cold water, emotional stress, pain, and sexual intercourse.

It usually occurs in people between the ages of 50 and 70, and these are usually isolated cases that do not occur frequently. At the same time, according to the study, there is an annual recurrence rate of between 6% and 10% of transient global amnesia.
