Anastasia Koss, 28, is an actress and content creator living between Hong Kong and New York with her fiancé.

Because her job keeps her constantly on the move, she relies heavily on the use of electronic payments, including her Apple Wallet, and like many other people, rarely carries cash on her.

in one clip On TikTok, which has amassed over 4.4 million views and 427,000 likes, she reveals a nifty trick for using electronic payments even when the phone’s battery is dead.

Anastasia figured out the trick while traveling underground on the MTR, Hong Kong’s public transport system.

Panicked, she figured she’d have to walk home until a kind stranger told her a secret.

“I’ve always worried about what would happen if my phone breaks and I don’t have cash or my card with me as I don’t like carrying cash around,” Anastasia told NeedToKnow.Online

“I went to the turnstile to scan and found I was stuck.

“I saw a long line of people waiting at the customer service counter to buy tickets and no one could help me.

“In a panic, I thought maybe someone could help me scan me out of the turnstile with their card, so I approached a passing man and asked if he could scan me.

“He then told me that if my Octopus card is connected to my Apple Wallet, I could still use it even if my phone died.

“I didn’t believe him and after trying it, it worked!

“I was amazed – I thought how strange it was that I wasn’t aware of this feature and that we rely so heavily on our phones in everyday situations.”

Curious, after Anastasia got home she decided to do some research to find out exactly how this iPhone feature works.

She said: “The NFC chip in the card stays active if you’ve set up what’s called an express mode.

“I had no idea the whole time!

“Since I’m a content creator, I’ve decided to share my experiences on TikTok when I get home.

“I thought it might help other people too if they ever find themselves in a similar situation.

“The video went viral overnight and people from all over the world said they wanted to try it in their own city’s train stations or go shopping after their phone went dead!”

You can find the option under Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay.

In the video, Anastasia shows her phone hovering over a payment machine, capturing her post: “Me today when I found out that even if my phone dies, I can still use Apple Pay.”

With any iPhone model from 2018 or newer (i.e. iPhone XS/XR or newer), you can use cards, passes and keys in the Wallet app with just one tap.

This works for up to five hours in power reserve mode.

Apple confirms this feature in a statement on its website.

“When iOS is not in use because the iPhone needs to be charged, there may be enough power left in the battery to support express card transactions,” Apple explains.

“Pressing the side button (or Home button on iPhone SE 2nd generation) displays the low battery icon along with text indicating that Express Cards can be used.

“The NFC controller performs express card transactions under the same conditions as when using iOS, except transactions are only displayed with haptic notification (no visible notification is displayed).”

Unfortunately, the feature doesn’t work if you shut down the iPhone yourself.

And you can only use it for approved Express Card services, which Apple lists as follows:

  • A payment or travel card known as an Express Travel Card
  • Student ID cards with express mode enabled
  • Car key with express mode activated
  • Home buttons with express mode enabled
  • Hospitality or corporate access cards with Express Mode enabled

For example, it will work for paying fares on the London Underground.

Just shopping in stores doesn’t work.

Social media users were left in awe.

“OH WHAT?!” wrote one user.

“In case anyone doesn’t know, you can do it without WiFi or data!” someone else said.

Another user added: “WHAT LIKE THE MAGIC?”

“I read this as you can use Apple Pay when you’re dead,” said another person, followed by laughing emojis.

Someone else added, “I knew it worked when you didn’t have data or internet, but I didn’t know it worked when it was dead!”

“SAY WALLAH,” said another amazed viewer. [sic]

Anastasia added: “That’s why I love TikTok – it’s fun to connect with others and hear their experiences, as apparently that’s not a known fact either.

“Now I don’t have to worry if my phone breaks, since various forms of electronic payment are accepted almost everywhere.”

Anastasia is also glad that she shared the trick as she thinks it can be especially helpful for women when they are stuck in an awkward situation.

She added: “I think for women that’s reassuring in a way – if your phone dies you can still get off the train or bus and you don’t feel stuck and have to ask people for help.

“If an NFC chip is still enabled and can be used for Express Pay on Apple Wallet for transit, other apps could develop similar functionality to help with security and tracking services to ensure we all travel safely to.” Come home or get help if needed.”
