Professor AN IRISH has warned the public that people who have been infected with Omicron are only immune for a certain time and are not immune to new variants.
The Immunology professor warned that Omicron could be just a dominant variant in a given time frame and that population immunity is a “movable party”.
Professor Christine Loscher told RTE’s Prime Time: “We already know that with vaccines and infections, our immunity declines over time, and that’s a natural process.
“We knew we needed boosters to restore immunity.
“We are facing a situation where Omicron provides a level of immunity in the population that will only be useful if we stick with Omicron as the dominant variant we are dealing with.
“And I’ll just assume it’s relevant for a specific period of time.”
Professor DCU emphasized that we have “basic immunity but not specific immunity to new variants that may emerge”.
“I think the challenges are that if another variation comes out, then everything goes out the window,” she said.

HOW IMPROVEMENT WORKS
She explains that the immunity we get from an infection or a vaccine has two parts.
“We talk a lot about initial immunity with antibodies that stop to get an infection,” she says.
“But we know from our studies that the other side of the immune system, the T-cell response, is what will continuously prevent us from getting very sick.
“So it doesn’t matter which variant comes with it. We’re very optimistic that those T cells will actually offer us a lot of protection against serious illness, regardless of the variant.
“And that’s really, very clear compared to the most recent information we have.”
Professor Loscher calls for action to be taken to “get a better measure of where number of cases is every day”.
“Being able to report positive antigens into the testing system so that they can be reported on cases, I feel is a really important move,” said Professor of Immunology. HSE went out and said they would do it today.
“Then they said that won’t apply until the end of next week, which I don’t understand because their portal is already open for close contacts to report antigen and case positivity. .”
