Pep Guardiola is confident Manchester City’s battered players will bounce back

Pep Guardiola is confident his battered Manchester City players will quickly refocus on the remaining challenge of their season – defending their Premier League title.

City’s hopes of winning the Champions League for the first time were dashed for another year when they succumbed to a dramatic late comeback from Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in midweek.

There is little time to reflect on the devastating loss as the national title race resumes with Sunday’s visit to Newcastle.

City have been in this situation before, having been agonizingly knocked out of European competition by Tottenham three years ago.

In this case, they played Spurs again just three days later and won.

However, Guardiola is so optimistic about his team’s ability to recover that he doesn’t even feel the need to remind them.

We have a big challenge in the next two weekspep Guardiola

“I’ve said many times that we can’t compare to what’s happened in the past,” said Guardiola, who knows four more wins will secure Liverpool’s fourth Premier League title in five years, regardless of Liverpool’s results.

“It is not necessary to remember what happened in the past. We will recover.

“We are better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than today.

“It’s football, accept it. We have a big challenge over the next two weeks – this week in particular – where we have the Premier League season in our hands.”

Kyle Walker is a fitness doubter (Nick Potts/PA)

City have doubts about the fitness of defenders Kyle Walker and John Stones for the Magpies clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Walker, who had missed the last five games, had to be substituted after 72 minutes with further ankle problems on Wednesday.

Stones has sidelined the last two games after struggling again with a hamstring problem in the semi-final first leg against Real last week. Pep Guardiola is confident Manchester City’s battered players will bounce back
