In 2014, Manchester United were in a worrying state of disarray.

Legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson had retired, handing the reins of England’s biggest football club to David Moyes, who struggled to maintain the high level of his compatriot and was sacked less than a year after being named boss.

Man United would eventually hire Louis van Gaal but there was a time when Ryan Giggs temporarily managed the club and Ferguson apparently took it upon himself to right his wrongs by suggesting Moyes for the job and landing Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola came over to FC Bayern Munich after four extremely successful years in Germany Barcelona. And Ferguson believed the Spaniard could be tempted with a move First League.

Guardiola recalled his private meeting with Ferguson, during which he admits he’s still not sure if he was actually offered the job due to his poor knowledge of English at the time Manchester United work or not.

“He invites me to it [a] Great restaurant and we had a very, very good time. My English [was] not so good if sir alex [Ferguson] speak a little fast, sometimes I had trouble understanding him,” said Guardiola.

“So I didn’t understand if I got an offer or not. It was a friendly dinner, like always with me when I started as a coach, he was so so gentle and we had a very, very good time together. “

As mentioned, United would hire Van Gaal rather than try to buy Guardiola out of his contract with Bayern Munich. Although of course the Spaniard eventually found his way there First League.

After three years at Bayern, Guardiola joined Manchester City In 2016, where he has remained since, he won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups.
