Peppa Pig will introduce the show’s first lesbian couple this week after petitions for the show picked up LGBTQ+ characters.
In the groundbreaking episode, which will air on Channel 5 later this week, Penny Polar Bear will introduce her two mummies to the children’s show.
Penny says, “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mom and my other mom.
“A mom is a doctor and a mom cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”
It follows petitions that have long called for the show to feature a queer family, including one that 17,000 people have signed.
A person who signed the petition said: “Hey, Duggee has a same-sex couple but no family yet – those families would be happy to see positive depictions of even just a same-sex family on preschool television – especially when those families have valid love and love.” show a safe home for children in which to grow and develop into well-educated adults (this has been proven in numerous studies).”
The petition was started by Beth G and Lacey K and explained their reason for starting the petition: “Although six series and over 250 episodes have been produced to date, none of the families have same-sex parents.
“Kids watching Peppa Pig are of an impressionable age, and excluding same-sex families will teach them that only families with either a single parent or two opposite-sex parents are normal.
“This means that children born to same-sex parents feel alienated from Peppa Pig and are more likely to be bullied by other children, simply out of ignorance. Peppa Pig isn’t just for entertainment, kids inevitably learn from it too.”
