A person was hit by a train last night, a train operator said.
The incident happened between Brighton and Polegate at around 11.15pm last night.
Trains could not run in either direction between Brighton, Eastbourne, Haywards Heath and Eastbourne.
Lines reopened just before 1 a.m.
A Southern Rail spokeswoman said: “It is with great sadness that we report that a person has been hit by a train traveling between Brighton and Polegate.
“We work closely with the Samaritans and support their work. If you or someone close to you is affected by this or any other incident, there is always someone you can speak to.
