Those who own Persona 5 Royal on PlayStation 4 will not be eligible for a free or discounted version of the game when it releases on PlayStation 5.
Atlus recently announced that its award-winning game Persona 5 Royal will be available on multiple platforms this year.
The game is an updated version of Persona 5, which was originally released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 simultaneously in 2016.
Released exclusively for PlayStation 4 owners in 2020, the Royal version includes a new protagonist and an additional school term.
Earlier this year, Atlus announced in a series of different announcements that the game that was nominated for Game of the Year would be re-released on different platforms.
Different platforms and hardware including PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PlayStation 5 would all get a port.
Those who already own the PlayStation 4 version were hoping that when it was released they would get a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version.
This would follow in the footsteps of popular games like Horizon Forbidden West and Nioh 2, giving players access to both PlayStation versions at no additional cost.
However, Atlus has confirmed its Japanese via a Q&A section website that those who wish to upgrade will have to pay full price to play the game.
As translated by GLHF, the question is:
“Will owners of the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal be able to upgrade to the PS5 version?”
To which Atlus replied,
“We are terribly sorry, but those who own Persona 5 Royal on PS4 will not receive any bonuses.
“We hope that those who wish to play Persona 5 Royal on PS5 will purchase the PS5 version separately.”
Atlus hasn’t confirmed if there will be improvements to the ports over the original PS4 version.
All ports of Persona 5 Royal will be available simultaneously on October 21, 2022.
The game will also be available from launch on Xbox Game Pass for consoles and PC.
