Peter Dinklage Calls Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Remake ‘Backward’

Above Second episode on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage said he was surprised to learn that Disney was working on a live-action version of the 1937 animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” – and more, that Disney was proud to announce that they have cast a Latina actress, Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”), in the lead role.

Dinklage, who has won four Emmys for his role in the HBO fantasy epic, said: “Literally no offense, but I was pleasantly surprised. “They took great pride in casting a Latin actress to play Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. Take a step back and look back at what you were doing there. It makes no sense to me.”

“You are making progress in a way,” he continued, “but you are still doing it [expletive] An old-fashioned tale of seven dwarves living in a cave.

“Didn’t I do anything to verify the cause of my soapbox?” he asks. “I guess I’m not big enough.”

Dinklage, who stars in the upcoming film “Cyrano,” an adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic play “Cyrano de Bergerac,” said he’s not opposed to remaking the classic fairy tale, as long as it is said to be “cool and progressive,” he said. “Let’s do it. All in.”

In a statement Tuesday, a Disney spokesperson said that “to avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have consulted opinions of members of the dwarven community”. Disney added that the film is still far from being produced.
