PETER James beamed all over his face as he partied with the cast of Grace at the launch of his new book.
The celebration of the release of Peter’s 18th Roy Grace novel, Picture You Dead, was a crowded affair as hundreds gathered for the event at Horatio’s Bar on Brighton’s Palace Pier on Wednesday night.
Speaking to The Argus, Peter said: “Tonight’s event is a celebration of Brighton and I think the books are helping to spread the word about the city.
“It’s the first time we’ve had a proper book launch since Covid and it’s great to see so many friends and fans. It’s incredible.”
The venue was adorned with paintings like the Mona Lisa, alluding to the new book’s roots in the world of art forgery.
Elements of the storyline of Picture You Dead are loosely based on Saltdean forger turned artist David Henty, whose friendship with Peter inspired many elements of the book.
The pair became good friends after Peter’s work on another non-fiction book, and Henty’s work provides the setting for the novel’s plot.

Jeremy Trevathan, Managing Director of Macmillan Publishers, said: “Tonight is a special night.
“Peter James is one of Macmillan’s greatest weapons and Picture You Dead is an absolute delight to read.”
The police presence at the event also demonstrated the author’s close ties to the force. Peter is co-patron of the Sussex Police Charitable Trust with Chief Constable Jo Shiner and the event was a fundraiser for the charity – police cadets held buckets while Peter pledged to donate £1,000.
Picture You Dead was released yesterday, with excerpts appearing in The Argus this week.
