Peter Tobin: Serial killer who lived in Brighton, dies aged 76

A serial killer who murdered two women and a young girl has died.

Notorious Scottish murderer Peter Tobin, who lived in Brighton from 1969 to 1990, was serving a life sentence at HMP Edinburgh for the murders of Angelika Kluk, Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol.

Last month the 76-year-old, who was battling cancer, reportedly fell in prison and broke his hip and was denied food and medicine.

He died in hospital today.

Tobin is also suspected of being linked to the 1988 disappearance of 18-year-old Louise Kay from Beachy Head. After telling a friend that she would sleep in her car after a night out, she was never seen again.

Detectives investigated whether Tobin was responsible for Louise’s disappearance but were never able to prove his involvement, although Strathclyde Police’s Detective Superintendant David Swindle said in a 2018 documentary he believed Tobin killed her.

He is also suspected of the murder of 22-year-old student Jessie Earl, who also disappeared from Eastbourne in 1980, with her remains being discovered on Beachy Head nine years later. Jessie’s parents believe Tobin is their daughter’s killer.

Mark Williams-Thomas, a former police officer and investigative editor for the Newsquest group who investigated the murders of Louise and Jessie, urged Tobin to confess to all of his crimes.

He said, “I would say to him, ‘You owe it to these people whose lives you ruined to finally tell them the truth.’

“I have no doubt that Peter Tobin is responsible for the murders of other people. I think the evidence supports his involvement in the disappearance of Jessie Earl and Louise Kay.

“He’s a mean man. I have heard many interviews with him from the police and there is no sympathy. He doesn’t care what he did or that he hurt anyone and sadly he will go to his grave with his secrets.”

Tobin raped and murdered 23-year-old Polish student Angelika Kluk and hid her body under the floor of a Glasgow church in 2006.

He also murdered 15-year-old schoolgirl Vicky Hamilton from Redding near Falkirk in 1991, and in the same year 18-year-old Dinah McNicol, who disappeared in Liphook, Hampshire.

Their bodies were found buried 17 years later in the garden of his former home in Margate in Kent.

Mark also believes Louise Kay’s body could be buried in the garden of Tobin’s former Brighton home.

He said: “The evidence tells us Tobin was a burial of corpses and therefore it is very believable that he buried her body and we can categorically place it in this apartment at the same time that Louise Kay is missing.

“I don’t know if Louise Kay is in that garden, but what I can tell you is that this is an investigation that should be closed because she could very well be.”
