Phil Thornton appointed senior vice president of Capitol Christian Music Group

Phil Thornton has been appointed senior vice president of Capitol Christian Music Group (Capitol CMG).


Thornton will report to the company’s Co-Presidents, Brad O’Donnell and Hudson Plachy.

In this newly created position, Thornton will focus on developing new business, signing talent and developing label, media and touring partnerships on behalf of Capitol CMG’s artists, the company said.

Thornton will begin his new role on May 3 and will be based at Capitol CMG’s Nashville headquarters.

Thornton was previously senior vice president/general manager of RCA Inspiration, a Nashville-based gospel music label operating under Sony Music’s Provident Music Group.

At the label, Thornton signed a deal with Mariah Carey for the release fall in love with christmas with Khalid and Kirk Franklin.

He also brought together HER and Tauren Wells, now signed to Capitol CMG, for the GRAMMY-nominated collaboration Keep Us Together (Hope Mix)worked with The Orchard to sign Tribl Records, home of Maverick City Music and collaborated with Pharrell Williams for his Voices Of Fire chorus, which was documented in a Netflix series.

Previously, Thornton was vice president and general manager of Urban Inspirational at eOne Music from 2012 to 2016, where he oversaw a roster of gospel and R&B artists including Erica Campbell, Shirley Caesar, Jonathan McReynolds, Tweet and Lalah Hathaway.

Thornton joins a string of hires and promotions at Capitol.

In March, Rebecca ‘Dimplez’ Ijeoma was named Senior Vice President, Digital Marketing & Content Development for Capitol Music Group (CMG), while Jeremy Vuernick was promoted to President of A&R for CMG in February.

This followed Arjun Pulijal’s promotion to President of CMG earlier this year.
