Philippe Coutinho rejects Liverpool ‘regret’ talk after Barcelona transfer failure

Philippe Coutinho’s decision to leave Liverpool and sign for Barcelona four years ago quickly turned from a ‘dream transfer’ to a disaster – but the Aston Villa star has no regrets

Philippe Coutinho stated that he does not regret his decision to leave Liverpool and join Barcelona.

The Brazilian switched Anfield to Camp Nou in January 2018 in a transfer deal worth up to £142m, with his ‘dream’ quickly turned into a nightmare after a bright start.

Having made just over 100 appearances in four years, Coutinho is currently on loan at Aston Villalink up with former Liverpool team-mates Steven Gerrard.

But despite having no charm, the 29-year-old man is still satisfied with the path he has chosen.

When asked if he regrets leaving the Red Devils in hindsight, Coutinho said ESPN : “No. At certain times we have to make decisions and one of my big dreams is to play for Barcelona.

“At the time, I decided to make that decision, but always have immense love, respect and gratitude for Liverpool and the friendship over the years I have been with the club.

“At that point I had a decision to make and I don’t regret it.”

Having made a similarly positive start at Villa Park, Coutinho reunited with Gerrard shortly after the Anfield legend took over as manager last year, with a shock loan agreement agree in January transfer window.

“I’ve always admired him a lot. For me, it’s an honor to play with him,” added the midfielder. “Now having him as a coach, with the experience he has, the coaching is very strong and demanding.

“He has big ambitions, I’m delighted to be here and I hope to return what he has come to expect by helping our team achieve its goals.

“For me, it was an honor to be a part of his career as a player, and now, as a coach, I feel even more honored.

“I have always had this relationship of admiration and respect. I wish I had the chance to work with him again. He is a guy who is very open with all the players and has a lot of photos. enjoy in the group.”

Coutinho’s career at Villa is off to a good start



Coutinho is clearly enjoying life back in England’s top flight, despite Gerrard’s side winning just one game in 2022.

“I really like it here. I missed it Premier League and the people here. They treated me so well and I missed this. It’s good to be back here,” he said to Sports sky.

“The games here are very intensive so I like that kind of game. I have to adapt again, I’m trying to train as hard as I can and I’m getting better from an intensity point of view. I think that’s it. difference that I really like.”
