A SEX offender once jailed for touching and embarrassing a schoolgirl on a bus has since been caught violating a court-ordered public transport ban three times.

Ames Callaghan, 59, was spotted getting Dublin buses despite being told not to travel without Garda clearance, a court has heard.

Judge John Hughes gave him a six-month suspended sentence.

Callaghan, of Decies Road, Ballyfermot, was found guilty of breaching an order under the Sex Offenders Act in Dublin District Court. He had denied the allegations.

Inspector Ken McLaughlin, who is now retired, said Callaghan must give gardaí 24-hour notice of any intention to use public transport.

Detective Garda Colm Grogan served the order on Callaghan in December 2020 and explained it to him in plain language at his front door.

“He threw the copy on the floor in front of me and told me to get out,” Det-Gda Grogan said.

Sgt Brendan O’Toole spotted Callaghan at a bus stop on Rathgar Road, Rathmines on 28th December 2020.

Callaghan said he got there by bus and intends to return by bus.

Garda Kevin Coller spotted Callaghan at a bus stop in Decies Road, Ballyfermot on 14 April 2021. He stopped the bus and found the accused on board.

Garda Charles McPartland saw Callaghan board a bus at a stop on Kylemore Road on April 25 last year.

Callaghan claimed he was not informed of the order or did not understand it.

He said he didn’t think he was breaking an order.

His defense argued the order was improperly transmitted and that Callaghan was unaware of it.

Callaghan, a former kickboxing champion, was disabled after a traffic accident.

He was jailed for five months in 2018 for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old girl on a Dublin bus. He told her she was “beautiful” and touched her hip and tried to pull her towards him while his penis was out.
