Pictures of the rescue of the Seven Sisters after being cut off by the flood

Dramatic images show the moment RNLI volunteers rescued three adults and a child from beneath the cliffs of the Seven Sisters after being cut off by the tide.

Emergency crews, including a Coast Guard helicopter, were called to the beauty spot after a fifth member of the group managed to land and sound the alarm.

The group had been walking along the beach on Saturday afternoon when they were caught by the tide and huddled to stand in a chalky bay with just two meters of dry surface.

Images released by the RNLI show the group as they awaited rescue and were hoisted to safety.

Newhaven RNLI mission navigator John Simcock said: “The victims were very distressed about their situation and for the safety of the fifth member of their group who had swum in.

“We were able to give them reassurance that the other person is okay and offer some comfort while the best rescue procedure was decided.

“It was a very inhospitable environment and the group remained extremely exposed and vulnerable under the cliff.”

Volunteer crews assisted on site with the helicopter rescue, which took about an hour and 45 minutes.

Helmsman Lewis Arnold urged people walking along the coast to be careful before setting off.

He said: “Tides rise quickly and can easily catch people. If you are planning a coastal walk or activity by the sea, we strongly recommend checking the weather and tides before setting out.

“If you get into trouble or see anyone in trouble in the water, please call 999 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard.”

Newhaven RNLI will be featured on BBC show Saving Lives At Sea tonight after a dog fell over 100ft off the cliffs at Seaford.

Max, a border collie, ended up in the sea after falling off a cliff. A lifeboat rescue team climbs ashore and lures him into a lifeboat with treats to return to shore.

The show, which will include footage of the remarkable rescue, airs on BBC Two tonight at 8pm. Pictures of the rescue of the Seven Sisters after being cut off by the flood
