Piers Morgan has branded the Eurovision Song Contest a “cheating farce” after Ukrainian rap group Kalush Orchestra won with what he said was a “yes vote” due to a military strike by Russia.
The Kalush Orchestra was crowned the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 on Saturday night, after the Ukrainian band won with the song Stefania, beating other countries and entries including Sam Ryder of the United Kingdom.
Ukraine took the lead from the start, before the final took place directly from Turin in Italy, home of last year’s champion Måneskin.
The group took the top spot after a tense night of voting, which saw the UK top the leaderboard following votes from the jury.
But in the end, the Ukrainian band took the top spot after a public vote – putting them at the top of the list with 631 points.
With Ukraine ravaged by its ongoing conflict with Russia, which has resulted in Russia being banned from participating in the annual singing competition, the country’s victory is particularly poignant.
Receiving the award, the band said: “Thank you very much. Thank you for supporting Ukraine. This victory belongs to every Ukrainian!”
Kalush is expected to win early in the contest and impress voters with their song Stefania, written about the mother of soldier Oleh Psyuk.
But after the results, TalkTV host Piers Morgan took to Twitter to say that the Singing Contest results “should not be determined by which country is suffering the most at the time”.
When a Twitter user challenged Piers over his criticism of Eurovision, suggesting that the broadcaster would rather we “just load all the songs into one computer and it will calculate which is” the best “.”
Piers replied, “No, I don’t. But no one who voted for Ukraine thinks this is the best song because it’s clearly nowhere near the best. Even Ukrainians don’t think it’s the best song..
“They got a yes vote, which is fine as long as we remove the word ‘contest’ from Eurovision.”
He added in a separate tweet: “The world’s most illogical, pointless, politically motivated ‘contest’ prevails. Ukraine could have sent one of their hero dogs to sniff out the bomb to bark at the national anthem and still win. Happy for them, but stop calling Eurovision a contest… it’s a scam. ”
Continuing his criticism, Piers added: “The outcome of an international ‘competition’ should not be determined by which country is suffering the most at the time of the ‘competition’ or not. there’s no point in having a contest.”
