Piers Morgan has defended Will Smith after actor sensationally slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday night in Hollywood.
The outspoken presenter, 56, may be in the minority of people in the King Richard star’s corner, but he admits he’s “moved to defend him”.
Will resented the comedian’s joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith on stage and took it upon himself to punch him before returning to his seat and yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out of your friggin’ mouth!”
And now that the dust has settled a bit, Piers insists that while Will originally laughed at Chris’ GI Jane joke, he felt compelled to protect his wife when he realized she was being shocked by the obvious mocking her alopecia was less than impressed.
registered mail The sunPiers said, “If Rock had known [about her condition] then it was a mean, cruel joke worthy of a man’s anger.
“And while I don’t condone violence, Will Smith didn’t hit him. It was just a slap, which Rock shook off in good spirits.”
The former Good Morning Britain man defended the Fresh Prince star against the current Cancel Culture mob, which he believes are out to destroy Will and his legacy.
Piers continued: “He stood up for his wife, the woman he blew the dust off of when she was going through a tough time, and said he would shine and create a safe space for her to heal and to grow and define yourself.
“In earlier eras, he would have been saluted for defending his girl and not ravaged by an overly sensitive snowflake society.”
Immediately after the shocking incident, celebrities took to social media to share their thoughts.
Among them was Serena Williams – Will portrayed her father in the epic film King Richard, which won Will his Academy Award for Best Actor.
The 40-year-old tennis star shared her stunned reaction to the incident in a series of clips on her Instagram Stories, revealing she was just as shocked as everyone else.

In the first clip, she can be seen wide-eyed and looking around in disbelief, while in a second video she told the camera she had to sit down in shock.
Elsewhere, One Tree Hill star Sophia Bush pointed out that despite such a “cruel” joke, violence was unjustified.
“Violence is not okay. Attack is never the answer. In addition? This is the second time Chris has made fun of Jada on the #Oscars stage and tonight he took care of her alopecia,” the actress mused on Twitter.
