Pixie Polite avoids the ‘Brighton Curse’ at Drag Race UK

A DRAG queen escaped the ‘Brighton Curse’ in the first episode of the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

Two previous contestants of the show from town, Joe Black and Anubis, were eliminated from the competition in the first episode of their respective seasons.

The Brighton native, however, made it to next week’s pixie polite after being declared safe by host RuPaul.

At the start of the show, Pixie said: “As a native of Brighton, do I worry about the Brighton Curse? A little — but instead of going home first, I’ll be the last one through that door.”

In the first challenge of the series, the 12 contestants had to perform two catwalk looks, one to celebrate the BBC’s 100th anniversary and another to convey their personality to the judges.

Pixie paid homage to BBC comedy Only Fools and Horses in a Del Boy-inspired drag outfit, with a second look inspired by clouds and sunbeams.

However, the Queen of Sussex, Dakota Schiffer, faced a struggle to stay in contention.

The judges said Dakota’s two looks seemed simple and didn’t appear to be on the same level as some of the other contestants.

One of the judges, Michelle Visage, said: “I know, nerves, but you have to allow that to unravel just because you’re here for a reason.”

Dakota, the first trans woman to compete on the British version of the show, competed in a lip-synch match against Essex’s Just May to remain in the competition, with the Horsham performer being selected to compete for another week.

In an interview earlier this month, Dakota spoke about the challenges of growing up trans.

Dakota said, “Sussex isn’t the best place for a 6’1” trans woman drag queen to grow up.

“I’ve always stood out but felt invisible at the same time, but I think it definitely made me who I am today.”

The remaining contestants will then team up in a girl group challenge next week when they headline the Yass-Tonbury Festival.

The show’s winner will be crowned Britain’s next drag superstar and receive a trip to Hollywood covering all expenses to produce a digital TV show.
