PLAYSTATION has reported disappointing numbers on the number of PS Plus subscribers, blaming people for “going outside”.
Sony has released its first-quarter financial results since revamping its PS Plus gaming subscription service.
PS Plus comes in three tiers: Essential, which offers the same games as the old PS Plus; Extra with PS4 and PS5 titles; and Premium, which includes games from PlayStation’s older consoles.
Sony expected the number of subscribers to increase after the increase as more games would be offered to players.
However, as reported by VGCthere was actually a small drop in subscribers to 47.3 million from 45.4 million last quarter.
In the earnings conference call, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki blamed a number of reasons for the decline in subscribers.
He said: “There wasn’t much momentum overall. Also, we didn’t do any aggressive promotions in the second quarter.
“More people are getting out there now, and sales of PS4 and third-party software have also been rather sluggish.
“However, PS5 engagement is quite high, so we expect some recovery in Q3.”
PS4 owners are apparently paying less for the subscription service, while people are still struggling to get their hands on PS5 consoles.
Another reason the subscription service might have struggled since the overhaul is that people are finding the new three-tier system confusing.
Each tier offers different rewards, is priced differently, and can be purchased monthly, quarterly, or annually at a different cost.
PlayStation also announced that it would not provide the majority of major releases at launch.
Smaller titles like Stray were released on the day of publication.
This means well-known first-party games like God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Forbidden West are not available through the service.
While Xbox has less exclusive games, their big names like Forza Horizon 5 were available on launch day.
