PLAYSTATION just announced a new loyalty rewards program that adds money to your PlayStation wallet the more games you play.
Registration for PlayStation Stars is free and is scheduled to launch later this year.
The program gives players loyalty points for participating in various campaigns for the program.
As the company in a blog entrythis includes promotions like playing a game monthly, earning certain trophies, or being the first in your area to go platinum in a major title.
These points can then be spent in an online catalog on things like specific PlayStation Store items or PSN wallets.
The company also creates a line of digital collectibles for fans.
These are 3D digital models of characters from some of PlayStation’s most popular franchises.
In conversation with The Washington PostGrace Chen, Vice President of Network Promotions, wanted to make sure players knew these collectibles weren’t NFTs.
“They are definitely not NFTs. Definitely not. You cannot trade or sell them.
“It doesn’t use blockchain technologies and it definitely doesn’t use NFTs.”
Chen also confirmed that before rolling out the program, the company is working to minimize the likelihood of fraudulent activity.
This includes people who sell services to get trophies on others’ accounts or hack platinum trophies.
PlayStation hopes to see adoption in PlayStation Plus subscriptions with this model.
Individuals who have joined the service, even at the cheapest Essential tier, will earn more loyalty points through the program.
The Stars name was chosen as PlayStation wanted to promote the idea that its possibilities are unlimited.
It also fits with PlayStation’s “play has no borders” slogan.
On the rationale for launching the loyalty program, a system similar to My Nintendo Rewards, Chen said:
“We wanted to create a program that honors this journey and the role PlayStation may have played in someone’s life.
“We wanted to do this in a way only PlayStation can.”
