PlayStation leaves Russia and pulls ALL game sales on Ukraine invasion

PLAYSTATION has become the latest major tech brand to withdraw from Russia following the Kremlin’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.

Sony’s games division said on Thursday that it is stopping selling consoles and software in the country.

The PlayStation Store will also no longer be available in Russia.

“Sony joins the global community in calling for peace in Ukraine,” the company said.

“We have suspended all software and hardware shipments, the launch of Gran Turismo 7 and the operation of the PlayStation Store in Russia.”

In a statement, Sony said it had donated $2 million to the United Nations refugee agency and Save the Children to assist victims of the tragedy.

International brands are increasingly shutting down operations in Russia amid Moscow’s escalating war with its neighbour.

Other video game giants including Xbox, Electronic Arts created by Fifa and CD Projekt by developer The Witcher, have also boycotted the country.

Other multinationals, from McDonald’s to Adidas and Samsung, have completely or partially suspended business in Russia in recent days.

Some attributed the disruption to the supply chain while others directly linked the move to outrage at President Vladimir Putin’s decision to send troops into Ukraine.

Nintendo, the company that makes the Switch console, announced on Thursday that it will be suspending sales of its products in Russia.

A Nintendo spokesman told AFP it was suspending all shipments to Russia “for the foreseeable future”.

Nintendo cited “significant volatility around transportation logistics and physical distribution” in the country as the reason for the move.

While a host of major companies have now pulled out of Russia, Sony’s exit will likely hit the country the hardest.

That’s because it boasts the largest presence in Russia of any panel maker, according to industry insiders.

Lewis Ward, an analyst at research firm IDC, said: “The PlayStation has the largest installed base, so if a company in terms of consoles has a particularly difficult choice from a financial perspective. Purely, it’s Sony” CNBC.
