Plowing championships Traffic and weather: Gardaí warn drivers after heavy rainfall

Gardaí are urging motorists traveling to the National Plowing Championships today to be extra cautious after heavy overnight rain.

Ardaí said there is “a lot of surface water on the access roads to the site after overnight rain”.

Motorists were again advised not to use Google Maps or “Navigation Devices” but to follow the posted routes and directions for Lake Garda.

Motorists coming from the South East/Carlow are advised to take the yellow route, those coming from Dublin and North Leinster should follow the purple route, those coming from the South East and Kilkenny are advised to use the gray route, motorists to the west and north it is recommended to follow the green route while the brown route is for people coming from Kerry and the south west.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann warns of continued heavy rain this morning, which will only clear up in the afternoon.

“This morning it will rain heavily at times,” said the forecaster. “Dry and bright weather developing in the west and north-west will extend to most other areas into morning, with rain becoming clear in the south-east by early afternoon. Moderate to fresh South West winds easing to a light North West breeze this morning, afternoon highs of 15 to 18 degrees.”

The national championships returned on Tuesday for the first time since the pandemic.

It is also the first time Ireland has hosted the World Plowing Championships as Russia was previously set to host the 2022 Games.

Gardaí have urged participants in the three-day festival to follow their traffic management plan.

They’ve put together six different routes based on where the bettors are traveling from and these are interactive and viewable on any internet-enabled device.

A Garda spokesman said: “With more than 80,000 people expected to attend this event each day, a traffic management and parking plan has been put in place.

“In order for traffic to be able to move to and from the event unhindered during these times, the help of all road users is required.

“Gardaí urges road users not taking part in the national plowing championships to avoid the N80 at Stradbally and all access roads to the village of Ratheniska from Tuesday 20 September at 6am until Thursday 22 September at 8pm.

“For National Plowing Championships competitors, please check the Traffic Management Plan on or in advance to find the correct route depending on where you are traveling from.”
