Joe Rogan was criticized for his comments about homelessness in Los Angeles during a recent episode of his controversial podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.
During the episode, which aired last Thursday, Rogan pointed to guest and fellow comedian Tom Segura, who appeared to joke about “shooting the homeless” in Los Angeles in connection with the California city’s burgeoning homelessness crisis.
It is estimated that more than 66,000 people were homeless in Los Angeles as of May 2022. In her resignation from the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (Lahsa), former chief executive Heidi Marsten said the crisis was a “monster of our own creation”.
While smoking cigars, Rogan and Segura touched on the issue of homelessness in Los Angeles in an interaction that fans online called “disgusting” and “disgusting.”
In the clip of their exchange, which is going viral on Twitter, Rogan first opened up about how the belongings of homeless people in Los Angeles were scattered.
Segura replied, “If you see something like that on the street, it’s protected property, at least in Los Angeles or California. As by law. That is the legal property of that person.”
“Oh, a homeless man’s property is protected?” Rogan fired back before Segura replied, “Absolutely. If you tried to move that or take that_”
“You would be arrested. Hilarious,” Rogan said, completing Segura’s sentence before adding, “But they wouldn’t arrest you if you shoot someone. Maybe you should just shoot the homeless.”

“I like your ideas,” Segura responded to Rogan’s comment.
Twitter users have denounced Rogan’s remarks, which many believe could spur crimes against the homeless.
One person wrote: “Joe Rogan’s only trick to solving the homeless problem: shoot her. way of condoning crimes against humanity.”
Another said: “After hearing Joe Rogan and Tom Segura jokes about shooting homeless people, I hope with every fiber of my being those words come back to bite them in the worst possible way.”
One social media user prefaced his comments by saying he “don’t think highly of Joe Rogan, I’ll admit that” but his comments about the homeless were “disgusting”.
“‘You will not be arrested if you shoot someone! So shoot the homeless,” paraphrasing Rogan’s comments, adding, “He advocates killing people who have nothing and are at their lowest point,” the fan tweet continued.
Homeless Los Angeles attorneys have also condemned Rogan’s statements.
In a statement to Diversity, homeless lawyer and We, the homeless Podcast creator Theo Henderson called Rogan’s comments “disgusting”.
He added: “It’s upsetting because not only is it out of touch but the reality is that people without shelter are being attacked by housed PEopel. To advocate shooting at homeless people or just giving those dog whistles to people who don’t see homeless people as human beings – I can’t believe you would advocate for that.
The Independent has reached out to a Rogan representative for comment.
