“Pointless” to talk about a possible return of Conor Gallagher – Patrick Vieira

Patrick Vieira is tired of asking “pointless” questions about Conor Gallagher after rumors of the midfielder’s possible return to Crystal Palace escalated this week.

Gallagher’s outstanding loan in south London last season earned him his first call-up in England but the 22-year-old played just a minute into Chelsea’s season opener at Everton.

His former boss did not rule out a reunion, but pointedly recalled the process.

“It’s not our decision,” Vieira said. “It has to be done by Chelsea, if the player is available then Conor has to make a decision.

“We’re like any other club and we focus on players who are available and here the situation is out of our hands, there’s no control so it’s pointless to talk about it.”

Gallagher, who has eight goals in 34 appearances for the Eagles, will be looking for more playing time as he bids for a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Qatar.

Asked if the unusual timing of November’s World Cup also affected the transfer window negotiations, Vieira replied: “It’s not just Conor, it’s the players who want a chance to go to the World Cup who are playing games want.

“There will be a question as to what is in their best interest but that is a player’s decision. If they are available we will show interest, who knows.”

Palace lost their Premier League opener 2-0 to Arsenal and will continue their difficult start to the 2022-23 season when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Monday night.

“Everyone in the game knows this stadium,” said Vieira. “This is a special floor. The atmosphere is one of the best in Europe. The players will be delighted, you want to play in stadiums where the atmosphere is strong.

“It’s going to be a challenge, but more than anything it’s exciting and enjoyable to play in these stadiums.

“I have no doubts about the character and personality of my team. We will do our best, it may not be enough, but we will not be shy or hide away – it will be a challenge but we are ready to take on those challenges.”

The composed Eagles boss was also looking forward to meeting his sideline counterpart Jurgen Klopp and expressed his admiration for the spirited German who will lead the hosts on Monday.

He added: “His personality, he’s present on the bench. For me it doesn’t change anything.

“It’s not about the managers, it’s about teams trying to win games. His career has been amazing, he’s won almost every single trophy and the way he develops players is really exciting.

“He has his destiny and mine will be what it will be. I admire him for what he has achieved in football in Germany. That’s it.”
