The Pokémon GO trading card set adds an amazing transforming Ditto mechanic straight from the game.
When opening a pack of the new Pokémon GO cards, players should look for a special Ditto icon in the lower left found on Basic Pokémon like Bidoof.
As revealed in an official Pokémon TCG Instagram post (below), the nondescript Bidoof card (and presumably a handful of other Pokémon) actually turns out to be a sticker, and can actually be peeled off to reveal a Ditto card behind it.
In Pokémon GO itself, Ditto also hides behind a rotating cast of Pokémon, including Bidoof, Pidgey, Ekans, and so on, and only when you catch one will “Oh?” appear. appear on screen – before revealing that you’ve actually just caught a Ditto.
Pretty impressively, the Pokémon TCG has managed to recreate this perfectly in the new card set, since the Bidoof used as an example is just a common card from the set that one might normally encounter.
The Pokémon GO set was announced for the trading card game in March, but fans wanting to get their hands on a special Ditto will have to wait a little longer as it won’t be released until July 1st.
Pokémon cards continue to grow in popularity 25 years after the original set was released, as evidenced by the number of people trying to steal them.
Around $250,000 worth of Pokémon merchandise was reportedly stolen from an independent game store in Minnesota in February, while a man was arrested in Tokyo in March for allegedly starting a physical robbery to steal the prized cards.
Also in March, a Georgia man didn’t directly steal Pokémon cards, but instead misappropriated money from the government to buy one, using a COVID-19 relief payment to purchase a rare, shiny Charizard.
