Pokémon has revealed two new mons based on a Generation 2 classic

THE final trailer for Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet was revealed today, showcasing two new Pokémon coming in the upcoming games.

Ed Sheeran’s Celestial plays above the trailer, a song Sheeran wrote specifically for the ninth generation.

Most of the trailer was a recap of previous announcements, including gym ladders, new Pokémon, and the new fighting gimmick Terastylization.

However, two new Pokémon have also been revealed that provide clues to the game’s plot.

Not much has been revealed aside from the designs and names of the Pokémon.

The two will be version exclusives, with Great Tusk appearing in Scarlet and Iron Treads in Violet.

These two designs fit the past and future themes and appear to be counterparts of each other.

Not only do they appear like past and future versions of the same Pokemon, but fans also believe they know the current Pokemon the two are based on.

With its large tusks, people believe the two are versions of Donphan, a Generation 2 elephant-like Ground-type Pokémon.

So far, five Pokémon based on Generation 2 designs have been revealed in-game, along with Wiglett, the Generation 1 Diglett lookalike.

First we saw a ground/venomous Paldean form of Wooper. Next came Grafaiai, a monkey who paints similarly to Smeargle.

The last revelation before the two new mons was a long-awaited development for Girafarig, called Farigiraf.

Usually, Pokémon games visit mons from a previous region to create hype for upcoming games.

In this case, the use of a number of Generation 2 Pokémon could be a clue that a new game based on the Johto region is being announced.

This would probably be a pure remake like HeartGold and SoulSilver or a new Let’s Go game.

Since the successful release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it could also be a game based on Johto’s past.

We’ll learn more when Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet release exclusively for Nintendo Switch on November 18th.
