Pokemon Legends: Arceus isn’t really like Breath of the Wild – except in one important way

From the moment it was published, Pokemon Legend: Arceus faced with a constant comparison – to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Even with the reviews dropping yesterday, I’ve seen quite a few reviews – which arguably should have known better – calling it ‘Pokemon of the Wild’ or something like that.

But how much is it like Breath of the Wild? Well… that’s not it. At all. Except perhaps in a way.

When I think of Breath of the Wild, I first think of two main aspects of that game’s design. Let’s check them out and compare them with Legends.

First of all, there’s the wide-open world of Hyrule, which makes you feel comfortable with the degree of player freedom, which feels like the antithesis of your typical Nintendo grip. Pokemon Legends: Arceus doesn’t have as many open worlds as open-ended regions. Structurally, it’s closer to a Monster Hunter game than any Zelda. Also, it’s always super clear and always tries to gently nudge you in the direction of the next story development. There’s nothing quite like prison and the opening goal is “Defeat Ganon.”

Second, I think of the interactive, layered nature of Breath of the Wild’s systems. The world is reacting, which means you can bind forces together or do things like spread flames to your advantage. Nature can be a tool like your sword. Pokemon Legends: Arceus has a more defined gameplay-focused and static world in it. While there are now systems where multiple wild Pokemon can battle you at once if you start the battle with multiple creatures nearby, none have focused on that prominent system – everything is quieter.

None of this is to say that Pokemon Legends: Arceus is bad. Actually, as I explained in VG247’s four-star rating, it’s really excellent and the best Pokemon game in a long time. But my point is that the constant comparisons to Breath of the Wild aren’t the best for either game, and at worst it evokes expectations that Legends: Arceus wasn’t designed to meet. It’s a different kind of game – and like I said, Monster Hunter is likely to be more key to this game’s development philosophy than any Zelda-based inspiration.


However, as I’ve teased earlier, it has one main direct thing in common with Breath of the Wild – and that’s the best the two games can possibly share.

Breath of the Wild has shaken the Zelda formula, upending some aspects, removing some, respecting others, but completely rethinking them all. It’s a tall watermark because of the resulting quality, but it’s still noticeable even before considering that – because of how brave it is. The Zelda series has essentially been following the recipe laid out in Ocarina of Time (itself a subtle 3D evolution of Links to the Past) for about twenty years, and it has done so with its success. relative work. After a light test game in Skyward Sword, the Zelda team began using it, and in the process created a game that is now considered to be defining for the series as a formulaic game that they has followed for the past two decades.

So does Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Pokemon turned 25 years old last year, but the big-budget mainline entries in the series all follow and repeat on the rebuilt template in Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow colors. The probable fact is a testament to the quality and potency of that original sample – but in obvious places it does start to thin out a bit. While it may not be as gruesome as Link’s open-world adventure, it’s still incredibly impressive – and a major milestone for the series. I can’t wait to see what it might inspire in the future.
