Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: which starter to choose?

JUST like any Pokémon game, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet begin your journey by choosing your partner.

Grass, fire, and water starters are still the pick of the day, but choosing between them can be difficult.

We’re going to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each of the three startermons to help you with that decision.

Here are the facts about all three starters in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Spoiler alert: we will also be talking about final evolution types types of gym leaders here, so if you don’t want to know, stop reading.

Sprigatito – The weed-type starter

The Gyms with the lowest Pokemon are the Bug and Grass Gyms, which Srigatito struggles with initially.

If you go for Weed Cat, you’ll definitely need some backups to progress in the early game.

In the late game, however, Sprigatito’s Grass/Dark-Typing will help you purge the stronger Ghost and Psychic-type Gyms.

However, this double tap is one of the worst in the games, with a 4x weakness and six 2x weaknesses, Kitty could be in danger.

Fuecoco – The fire-type starter

Fire is the most useful tap early in the game because of the gym ladder mentioned above.

However, in the mid-game it will struggle with more Electric and Water types.

Despite this, the final evolution is a Fire/Ghost type that is both good in endgame and excellent overall.

If you decide to breed and manage to hatch the Unconscious hidden ability, you will also get a huge buff as your crocodile ignores the buffs of others.

Quaxly – The water-type starter

Despite his adorable looks, Quaxly might be your worst choice in terms of type pairings.

He has no advantage anywhere in the game, and his last evolution’s Water/Fighting type only serves to make him weaker.

It’s weak to Electric, Grass, Flying, Psychic, and Fairy-types, all of which are common.

However, his hidden ability Moxie is extremely powerful when you get hold of it, increasing attack every time you KO.
