Russia’s biggest counter-attack on sanctions immediately sent gas prices up 20 percent before leveling off at a 10 percent hike within hours of the announcement.

It is an attempt by Moscow to “divide and rule” the European Union by turning the power tap “off”. It is likely that this disruption in gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria is also a direct message to Germany, which is still trying to follow the EU line on sanctions and continue to pay Russia in euros rather than rubles.
