Police are issuing a statement after caravans were sighted in Goring village green

POLICE have issued a statement after a group of caravans were sighted in a village green.

West Sussex County Council confirmed there are 24 caravans and motorhomes parked at Goring Greensward.

Gas canisters, deckchairs and other items were also seen on the village green in Marine Drive, Goring on Wednesday July 6th.

“All have been served with a notice asking them to vacate the land,” said a spokeswoman for West Sussex County Council.

“If they don’t do this, there will be legal proceedings.

“Together with Sussex Police we will continue to monitor the site.”

A police spokesman said officers were aware of the caravans.

“We are responding to reports of an unauthorized camp at Goring Gap on Marine Drive,” he said.

“Our officers, who work in conjunction with local authorities, have attended and are committed to the group.”

The square is maintained by Worthing Borough Council, with a sign in the park asking people not to enter with unauthorized vehicles.

Worthing Borough Council has also been asked to comment.

Around a dozen caravans arrived at Preston Park, Brighton, earlier this year.

Brighton and Hove City Council has urged police to use emergency powers to remove a group of Travelers who eventually left.

Photos showed a number of people inside the trailers doing their laundry and engaging in other activities.

Also last year, a group set up camp in Stanmer Park.

Up to six caravans and other various vehicles were pictured parked near the University of Sussex in March 2021.

A vehicle could be seen towing logging machines.

Meanwhile, as of July last year there were sites for 44 caravans on municipal and private sites in Brighton and Hove, according to the government’s latest caravan count.

Data from the Department for Leveling Up, Housing and Communities showed there were 38 caravans in the area in July 2021 – up from 28 in July 2019.

Of the people counted this year, nine were in unauthorized parking spaces.
