The public prosecutor’s office handed over files to Christian Brückner’s lawyer – the last step under German law before charges are brought. They contain no evidence of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance
Prosecutors are one step closer to indicting Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner of new sex crimes.
They have turned over their files to Brückner’s lawyer, the final step under German law before charges are filed.
The paperwork contains evidence allegedly linking him to the rape of an Irish tour guide and indecent revelations.
German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters told Der Spiegel the files were handed over to Brückner’s lawyer Friedrich Fulscher earlier this week. They contain no evidence of Madeleine’s disappearance from her parents’ holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in 2007.
Mr Wolters previously said investigators were certain Brueckner, 45, who was living at the resort, abducted the three-year-old.
Hazel Behan says she was raped in Praia de Rocha in June 2004.
She has waived her right to anonymity and said her masked attacker spoke English with a German accent.
The ordeal she described was similar to the rape Brueckner committed on a pensioner in Praia da Luz in 2005, for which he is still in prison.
Files given to Mr Fulscher also contain evidence allegedly linking Brueckner to two indecent disclosures to children in Portugal. Mr. Wolters: “The defense attorney must be given a reasonable amount of time to process the files and discuss them with his client.
“In view of the quite extensive files … Mr. Fulscher will need a few weeks.”
Mr. Fulscher now has a right of reply before charges are filed.
Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry, from Rothley, Leics, are hoping their daughter is still alive.
