It turned out that the driver had only owned the car for 45 minutes and had forgotten to insure it.

Wilts Specialist Ops tweeted: “RPU had pulled another car off the road today without insurance after the driver owned it for 45 minutes.”

They reminded motorists, “The thing is, if you get a new whip, you actually have to get insurance.”

It is illegal to drive a car on public roads without insurance, even if you just bought it and are driving home.

According to; “It is illegal to drive a vehicle on a street or in a public place without at least one liability insurance.

“Even if the vehicle itself is insured, you could be penalized if you are not properly insured to drive it.”

The consequences for driving without insurance are serious, including points on your driver’s license and a fine. says: “Police could give you a fixed fine of £300 and six penalty points if you’re caught driving a vehicle for which you’re not insured.

“If the case goes to court, you can get an unlimited fine or be banned from driving.”

Citizen’s Advice reminds motorists: “Police can use the local vehicle insurance database to check if your vehicle is covered.

“If not, they can confiscate it immediately, even if you then buy insurance at the curb.

“You have to show proof of insurance and pay fees to get your vehicle back.

If you don’t do this, the police can dispose of your car 14 days later. If they sell it, you can reclaim money from the sale.”

The only situations in which a car does not need insurance are if it is SORN and is off the road, if it was off the road before February 1st, 1998, if it was scrapped, stolen or exported and you have reported this or it is in stock at a retailer.
