LONDON – The Metropolitan Police will issue 20 fines over parties attended by politicians and officials at the top of the UK government that broke COVID laws.
Since January, police have been investigating allegations of 12 lockdown-breaking gatherings at Downing Street and Whitehall, despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s initial claims that the rules were being followed at all times.
The people involved are not expected to be named, but insiders say the list doesn’t include Johnson himself.
The Met Police said in a statement “we are making every effort to expeditiously move this investigation forward,” but that “due to the significant amount of investigative material remaining to be evaluated, further referrals may be made.”
Parties held in Downing Street and Whitehall during lockdown constituted “serious leadership failures”, according to a report by senior official Sue Gray completed earlier this year. Gray was only able to issue a partial update while the Metropolitan Police investigation continues.
