Police name Girl, 9, shot by gunman who chased man inside

A nine-year-old girl who was shot dead in Liverpool has been named Olivia Pratt-Korbel by Merseyside Police.

Erseyside Police have opened a murder investigation and launched a manhunt for the killer.

Serena Kennedy and Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Kameen told media today the shooting happened after a 35-year-old man was pursued by a gunman.

Ms Kennedy said the man broke into Olivia’s home where she was with her mother. The shooter then followed him “firing with utter disregard,” hitting all three people and fatally wounding the nine-year-old.

Olivia’s mother, Cheryl, tried to stop him from entering the property and sustained a gunshot wound to the wrist. As she struggled to shut the door, the same shot that hit Cheryl mortally wounded Olivia.

The intruder was shot in the body before fleeing the scene.

Friends of the man who had crowded into the house picked him up off the street and took him to the hospital “while Olivia lay dying,” Ms Kennedy said. The vehicle they were traveling in has since been confiscated.

Olivia was taken to Alder Hey Hospital in critical condition, where she later died.

Officers were called at 10pm Monday to reports of a shooting at a home on Kingsheath Avenue, Knotty Ash.

The child sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Police said the girl’s family members have been informed and are being assisted by specially trained officers.

Ms Kennedy said Olivia’s “family was absolutely devastated, heartbroken and heartbroken”.

She added: “I know the murder of Olivia has shocked our communities who are rightly angry and outraged that such a heinous crime was being committed here on the streets of Merseyside.

“The people of Liverpool and Merseyside are known for their compassion and solidarity in times of crisis and I know our communities, people want to help families in any way we can.

“This is not the time for anyone who knows who is responsible for this shooting to shut themselves up.

“It is time for our communities to come together with us and make Merseyside a place where the use of guns on our streets is totally unacceptable and those who use them are held accountable.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel has expressed her “heartfelt condolences” to the family of the nine-year-old who was shot dead in Liverpool and pledged her “full support” to Merseyside Police.

She said: “This morning I spoke to the Chief Constable of Merseyside Police about the tragic shooting in Liverpool last night.

“My sincere condolences to the family of the late nine-year-old girl.

“It is important that everyone comes forward with information to assist the police in their investigation.

“The force has my full support and will receive any additional resources it may require.”
