Police release new picture of man wanted for kidnapping six-year-old girl

Police investigating the kidnapping of a six-year-old girl in Manchester have released a new picture of a man they are looking for in connection with the incident.

The child was taken from Droylsden in Tameside to a wooded area near a disused railway line on Wednesday.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the girl was “reunited safely with her family a short time later” but officers are asking for help in locating a man.

Police said in a statement: “A search is ongoing for the man and there is a large police presence in the area pending an extensive investigation.”

A third picture of the man was released Thursday night after two pictures were posted Wednesday night.

Police said the first picture was taken shortly after reports of the kidnapping were first reported and the second about 30 minutes after the incident, with the man seen with his jacket around his waist on Gainsborough Road as he headed towards The Snipe went.

A 35-year-old man, who is not the person pictured, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the kidnapping. He was questioned by detectives but released without further action, the force said.

Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt, CID of GMP Ashton, said: “I would like to commend the victim for her immense courage in assisting police officers with our investigation, she has the support of specialist officers and partners at this truly distressing time.

“A full investigation is ongoing with significant resources and I want to reassure the community and as a precaution we have additional police officers and PCSOs on the road.

“At this stage it appears to be an isolated case, but I would like to reiterate how keen we are to find the person responsible and bring him to justice as soon as possible.

“I’d like to thank the public for their support so far, we’ve had a large number of calls and a number of names that have been brought to our attention, as well as new footage, some of which we were able to release today. If you know or see anything, please contact us as soon as possible.”

GMP said members of the public who believe they have seen the man pictured in the series of photos should call 999 and quote incident 2270 from 08/17/2022.
