Police warn villagers to ‘lock windows and doors’ after 86-year-old wife was murdered and husband scrambled for life in ‘terrifying’ raid

POLICE today warned villagers to lock their windows and doors after an elderly couple was attacked in a horrific home raid.

Freda Walker, 86, was found dead in her 50-year-old home while her husband Kenneth, 88, suffered life-threatening “horrific” injuries.

The pair were spotted in the quiet village of Langwith Junction, Derbys, following the horror attack on Saturday morning.

Officers rushed to the scene at around 9:30 a.m. after reports that two people were injured.

Neighbors have since revealed that the “devoted” couple was ambushed by a thief who broke into their property.

Freda sadly died at the scene and her husband was taken to hospital in “critical” condition.

Kenneth, a retired mining safety inspector who served on Shirebrook Town Council, celebrated her 88th birthday on January 13, neighbors said.

He remains in intensive care with what police describe as “terrible” life-threatening injuries.

Detectives have warned anyone living in the area to stay home.

Speaking at the crime scene, Superintendent Hayley Barnett said: “While I cannot speak to the mechanism by which the injuries occurred, what I would encourage everyone to do is implement security. good in relation to their home.

“Lock their doors and windows and don’t let any strangers in. Don’t leave any valuables on display.

“And have a means of contacting emergency services if needed.

“Investigators are looking at the widest possible range of scenarios along with other forces to see if there are any other offenses that could be linked to this.”

She also described the couple as “well known” in the village, confirming no arrests had been made and the incident was not a domestic case.

Chf Supt Barnett added: “We want [Kenneth] All the best and I really hope that he recovers quickly, he is getting the best care at the moment.

“The family already knows, but I’m not sure if the family is with him at this point.”

Devotions have poured in from heartbroken neighbors in the “tight” community.

A local resident said: “Ken and Freda were devoted to each other.

“This shocked everyone who knew them.”

‘SHOCKING Incident’

Another, a Sunday morning dog walker and friend of the couple, added today: “They are very nice people.

“Kenneth was a local councilor very involved in the area.

“They’re always a nice couple and ready to talk to you.

“I just know they’re inviting and lovely. I always wave to them when I pass by.”

Another neighbor, who lives two doors down from the elderly couple, described the incident as “sad”.

“This is a close-knit area – everyone knows everyone,” they said.

“It’s shocking and upsetting. I’ve lived on this street for 53 years and it’s an area worth living in. It’s really sad.”

And one local, who lives on the neighboring property of Primrose Way, said: “I heard there was some kind of break-in or burglary.

“It was just a shock – you don’t expect to hear something like this happening in a quiet residential area.”

URGENT APPEARANCE

The couple’s relatives have been told the “shocking” incident and are being supported by professional staff.

Police remain at the scene and locals have been warned that there will be a police presence for some time.

Flowers were placed outside the couple’s home, with a touching inscription: “To a lovely woman who will help anyone she can.”

Officers are appealing to anyone with information to provide “as a matter of urgency”.

Chf Supt Barnett said: “This is an understandable shock to the community at Langwith Junction and our thoughts go to all those affected – especially his family and friends. men and women.

“Residents in and around Station Road will see an increased police presence in the coming days and I would like to reassure all those in the area that all forces, as well as colleagues in the area from the EMSOU Main Crime team, are working to fully understand the circumstances of this incident.

“I would urge anyone with any information about the incident to contact this force with confidence, as a matter of urgency.”
