Police warning after youths jump from bridge into Ardingly reservoir

Police have issued an alert that a group of youths have been seen jumping from a bridge into a reservoir.

Mid Sussex Police reminded the public that while attractive in warm weather, reservoirs can be dangerous.

“We have received reports of groups of young people jumping from what is known as Platts Bridge into the reservoir at Ardingly, Haywards Heath,” a police spokesman said.

“Jumping bridges and swimming in reservoirs is strictly forbidden.

“Reservoirs may look like the perfect place to cool off in hot weather, but they can be full of hidden dangers.

“These are not lakes, the water depth and temperature changes quickly. Keep your family and friends safe this summer.”

Earlier this year, warnings were raised about the dangers of tombstones.

Tombstoning is jumping or diving into water from a great height.

The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service warned of “hidden dangers” for those considering taking part in the dangerous activity.

“Water depths change, debris may be hidden. And jumping in the water can cause cold water shock.

“Every year people have to be rescued, suffer serious injuries or even die. Protect yourself and your friends. Don’t jump into the unknown.”

A previous Coast Guard statement said: “We cannot stress enough how dangerous it can be to literally leap into the unknown.

“One can never tell what is hidden beneath the surface of the sea.

“Not only hidden rocks, but also other objects could be floating under the surface or on the seabed.

“Just hitting the water from a sufficient height can lead to this.”
