Hello and welcome back to Box Art Brawl! We can’t believe it’s already a week, but here we are. Hope you’re all fine!

Last week we checked out Super Paper Mario for the Nintendo Wii and threw the North American, European and Japanese box arts into the ring for a fight for the ages (okay, calm down). North American cardboard art – with its busier and more colorful exhibition – won hands down, receiving 69% of the vote. Japanese box art took 16% while European box art took 15%.

This week, with the announcement of the N64 classic Mario Golf still fresh in our minds en route to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, we thought we’d take a look at how North American packaging art stacks up against the Japanese’s execution . To say that the two designs are slightly different would be a drastic Understated, so we’re very excited to see how this pans out!

Be sure to cast your vote in the poll below; But first, let’s look at the box art designs themselves.

North America

When it comes to boxing skills, the US version of Mario Golf is a pretty standard affair. You have Mario himself in the foreground looking like he fired a shot that would send Happy Gilmore into a tantrum while the rest of the cast looks on in what we can only assume is total astonishment.

The tagline “TEE UP WITH MARIO AND HIS FRIENDS” is inscribed at the bottom of the artwork, completing a composition that suggests well what type of experience you are embarking on. This is a golf game through and through, albeit with a little extra “Nintendo flair”.

ok now this is interesting. The Japanese version of Mario Golf features perhaps one of Nintendo’s sleekest designs. You can see Mario in the extreme foreground striking a pose quite reminiscent of US box art. However, the focus is on Mario’s shadow and the surrounding fairway; It’s an interesting design, and it’s not one that Nintendo is likely to try again any time soon.

The logo itself is a bit strange. We like how it shows a bird’s eye view of a golf course and the crest in the center is pretty cool, but what’s the point of that slogan?!

“For all gamers hoping to touch real entertainment”.

We’re not even sure what that means, but is it, shall we say, unique?

Finally, let’s appreciate Baby Mario in the lower left corner; how sweet!

Thanks for voting! See you next time for another round of Box Art Brawl.
