Poop bags pile up at Hollingbury Hillfort in Brighton

A pile of dog poop bags have accumulated at Hollingbury golf course after people left them where a rubbish bin used to be.

Dog walkers, who regularly use the golf course’s public footpaths, took to social media to share their anger after spotting the pile near Hollingbury Hillfort, a proposed ancient monument.

The pile of about 20 bags has been piling up over the past few weeks, and regular walkers describe it as an example of “lazy dog walkers” relying on the “dog poop fairies”.

The bin has been removed as Brighton and Hove City Council is reviewing the locations of dog waste bins across the area and trying to encourage people to use standard bins instead.

Joy Flowers, who regularly walks her dog in the area, said: “Why take the bins away without notification? And how about one?

“The little rubbish bin comes in handy when you reach the area off Ditchling Road. But I’m always on the other side, so the bin on the hill fort has been great for many years.”

The council said: “We are in the process of removing all off-road dog waste bins. We do not have off-road vehicles, and access to the bins is often impossible in rainy weather.

“Moving heavy containers long distances by hand is an unacceptable health and safety hazard for our employees.

“We hope to be able to work with the golf course administration to agree on alternative bin locations.

“Meanwhile, there are still a few dog bins in the general area of the golf course. We ask dog sitters to use these other bins for now.”
