Pop singer Shakira’s father ‘falls off’ as she splits with Gerard Piqué

Pop singer Shakira has revealed that her elderly father is being treated in hospital after experiencing a ‘bad fall’ – all amid her relationship with footballer Gerard Piqué has come to an end.

The distraught 45-year-old Colombian singer took to social media on Saturday to set the record shortly after photos emerged that appeared to show her being taken to the hospital.

However, she explained that she was in the back of an ambulance with her 90-year-old father William Mebarak Chadid, who had fallen.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Shakira shared a snap of herself affectionately kissing her elderly father’s bruised face and shared a statement about the photos that have surfaced in Spain.

She wrote: “Guys, I am receiving a lot of messages of concern that I was seen in an ambulance in Barcelona recently.

“I just wanted to let you know that those pictures are from last weekend (the 28th), when my dad had an unfortunate fall and I went with him in the ambulance to the hospital where he was recovering.

“Please send all of your best wishes his way and thank you all as always for all your love and support.”

Fans have since responded with expressions of concern and well-wishes to Shakira’s father – while many others declared that “here for you”.

One Twitter follower replied: “I’m so sorry, hope he’s okay, and I hope you’re okay too.”

Shakira’s update on her father’s health comes just hours after news broke that her relationship with Gerard, 35, had come to an abrupt end.

The couple have been an item since 2011 and together they welcomed two sons; Milan is nine years old and Sasha is seven years old.

A brief statement, released by the singer’s media agency, confirmed on Saturday: “We regret to confirm that we have split.

“For the sake of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect their privacy. Thanks for your understanding. ”

While local Spanish reports suggest that the couple broke up a few weeks ago and have been living separately.

Spain’s El Periodico newspaper claims Gerard has been living in a bachelor’s apartment and has lived a “party lifestyle” since the split.

The pair met again in 2010 when Shakira made a music video for her World Cup hit Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).

The payee has never been married but has welcomed their two sons together and lives in Barcelona – as Spanish footballer Gerard plays for the city’s soccer club.
