Pope lashes out at ‘potentate’ Putin over ‘anachronistic claims’ about Ukraine – POLITICO

During a speech in the Maltese capital Valletta on Saturday, Pope Francis implicitly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine.

Without specifically mentioning Putin or the war in Ukraine, the pope addressed “the wind from Eastern Europe,” according to the Vatican news agency Vatican News.

“The icy winds of war, which bring only death, destruction and hatred, have swept mightily across the lives of many and have struck us all,” Francis said, adding that “once again, some potentates have been sadly overtaken in anachronistic ones Claims of nationalist interests provoke and fuel conflict, while ordinary people feel the need to build a future that is either shared or not.”

The pope had previously described the war in Ukraine as a “massacre” and “unacceptable armed aggression,” but had never been so relatively overt about Putin.

On Saturday, during his trip to Malta, he took the opportunity to present the island as an EU member state as an incentive to end all wars. “Malta, resplendent in the heart of the Mediterranean, can serve as an inspiration for us as there is an urgent need to restore the beauty to the face of a war-ravaged humanity,” he said.

Francis regretted the return of hostilities around the world and what he perceived as a waning enthusiasm for peace, which he said coincided with increased investment in the defense industry.

“In this way … not only peace but also so many big issues like the fight against hunger and inequality are no longer on the list of top political agendas,” he said.

Later on Saturday, the pope released a series of tweets about migration, including one in which he called for a broad, collective effort to help those displaced from Ukraine.

“The growing migration emergency – here we can think of the refugees from war-torn Ukraine – requires a broad-based and joint response,” he said tweet read. “Some countries cannot respond to the entire issue while others remain indifferent bystanders!”
