Poundland launches online shopping after acquiring giant rival Poundshop.com

The acquisition will accelerate the company’s plans to roll out online after a small trial in the West Midlands last year, selling home appliances, clothing and frozen food.

Poundland has completed its takeover of online discount retailer, Poundshop.com, which means discount store shoppers will be able to shop online for the first time.

The brand says the acquisition is part of a ‘Poundland transition’ that will power a nationwide rollout of its own online store, after a test last year.

Poundshop.com was founded in 2014 and has close to 400,000 customers across the UK.

It employs about 65 workers at its distribution center in Fourbury, West Midlands, all of which will remain protected under the new ownership.

A spokeswoman said all online orders will also continue to be processed as normal during the move.

Poundland first test last year online shoppingwith a trial in Birmingham and Walsall and then the whole of the Midlands and South Yorkshire.

Bosses today said the next stage in its expansion is launching Pep & Co’s clothing and homewares outside the UK – offering Dealz online service in the Republic of Ireland.

The implementation follows opened seven new stores last year and the expansion of the frozen food and clothing partnership.

The latest retail stores to open include branches in Rayleigh, Essex and Southampton in Hampshire.

Poundland was founded in 1990 as primarily a £1 shop, initially selling clearance items.

It currently operates just under 900 stores across the UK and Ireland, and sells merchandise with a £5 limit.
