Power Wash Simulator is the virtual therapy we all need

At its core, most video games are about cleaning up.

Take shooting games. You progress through the level, aiming for the sights and pulling the trigger when your red dot sight is directly over an enemy’s head.

bang. The enemy is removed from the game.

It’s the same instant gratification you get from removing rocks and weeds from your ranch in Stardew Valley, a game about building a farm.

They all tap into the same part of your brain.

What separates a good shooter game from a boring one is a mix of things: level design, encounter design, and gunfeel, which includes a number of different development techniques.

For a weapon to feel satisfying, it needs punchy audio, slick animations, and most importantly, how the world and enemies react to a shot.

It gets old fast with enemies all falling over in the same pre-made animation. Video game weapons feel better with bullets shattering walls, glass shattering, and bodies jutting off screen.

I think that’s why I can’t stop playing Power Wash Simulator and that’s exactly what it sounds like. A real dad game.

You take control of a power wash company and go on jobs. Choose the right nozzle and blast away the dirt – dirty playgrounds, dirty delivery trucks and swampy backyards are just a few of the “enemies” you’ll face.

Everything in this game is absolutely caked in dirt. Every inch of every surface. It almost feels like something out of a coloring book when you bring an environment to life with a heavy-duty hose.

It looks boring as an observer, but that all changes when you’re the one spraying.

There’s something going on psychologically here, and I think it boils down to one simple fact: we have so little control over our own lives.

Power Wash Simulator is work, but it’s low-effort and opt-in. It’s almost like therapy.

It’s a world where you have some agency. Simply spray away the dirt and bring life to your surroundings.

You don’t have to pay rent. You don’t have to watch politicians squabble over who can implement the most horrific policies or steal the most money from the working class.

You definitely don’t have to fight other people for toilet paper to wipe your ass in a pandemic. It’s just you, the mud and the hose. The perfect podcast game.

Or, if you want some company, you can always bring a friend and play co-op.

Power Wash Simulator is now available for Xbox and PC. If you subscribe to Game Pass, you can download it as part of your subscription.
