character creation

Character creation is robust in Noah’s Heart, offering many pre-made options as well as dozens of sliders to fine-tune your appearance – no copy-pasting of characters here! You start by choosing your gender, then you’re taken to a quick customization screen where you can choose your character’s height and body fat ratio, along with one of several pre-made facial expressions. You’ll then move on to more detailed customization, allowing you to fine-tune your character’s face, makeup, hair, height, and skin tone. The options in Noah’s Heart are vast, allowing you to really go deep with your looks, from beautiful to bizarre.

Instead of a traditional class system, Noah’s Heart determines your abilities based on your choice of weapon – which you must select next after you’ve completed your glamour. Your options are Sword and Shield, Lance, Bow, and Dual Blades. We’ll go into more detail about the combat system later, but for now it’s good to know that your choices when creating your character won’t stop you from changing your mind later.

Finally, you’ll have the opportunity to preview some of the game’s outfits for your character (along with hints on how to obtain them) and actions. This is also where you choose your character’s voice based on personality types and name your character before entering the world for your first cutscene.

When you start Noah’s Heart, you’re presented with two control options suited to two different playstyles. The first, action-adventure, features smart camera controls that automatically align the game’s camera to your character as you play while giving you precise, manual control over your combat combos. The second, RPG, flips these options – you get more control over the game’s camera, but in return your combat becomes fast-paced auto-combo style, allowing you to focus more on exploration and less on combat. Both modes can be further customized after completing the tutorial.

On mobile, you have a non-invasive thumbstick motion control panel at the bottom left of the screen that allows you to move freely in any area. An automatic navigation function can also lead you directly to some destinations. Objects and NPCs can be interacted with by direct tapping.

Your combat and movement actions are displayed at the bottom right of the screen. These include jumping and dodging/dashing initially, but early on you’ll also unlock the grappling hook. This ability behaves as expected – it lets you “grab” nearby environmental objects and accelerates you toward them. To aim the hook, all you have to do is swipe the screen to adjust your camera and aim at grapple points.

There is also a jetpack that allows you to travel even longer distances. The jetpack first shoots you up into the air before the jets shut off and lets you glide through the air. It’s not a true method of flight, but very useful for travel.

Finally, you can also get a mount. Note that mounts have their own controls, and you may want to enable or disable auto-pathfinding depending on what you’re riding. The early game introduces you to taming wild horses, one of the game’s most important mounts. You can choose from one of three starting colors. If you mount this horse, you will be introduced to the taming mini-game in which you have to carefully respond to different horse movements with the appropriate actions at a given time. If you succeed, the horse is yours! You can even breed horses to create the ultimate equine companion for your adventure.

As previously mentioned, combat in the game is combo-based. The attacks available to you depend on the weapon you have equipped – you can also change the weapon type without penalty. Using attack skills deals damage but also enrages monsters over time. You can also use your movement skills during combat, which sometimes opens up new combos. Be aware that these moving actions require stamina, and using them excessively can leave you exhausted at the wrong moment. Enemies telegraph larger attacks with glowing areas on the ground, so you’ll want to avoid them before these abilities go off.

One of the skills that is universal to all weapon types is the “heavy attack”. This attack reduces enemies’ rage time, so being ready at the right moment in battle is crucial. There’s also a “Knockup” ability that lets you juggle certain enemy types in the air, disrupting their attacks and opening up even more combo opportunities. Finally, you’ll unlock a two-handed weapon – your choice of crossbow or dart – which gives all styles a ranged option that unleashes even more combo potential. There is an in-game guide where you can see the combos available for a specific weapon type, so make sure you study it.

Overall, the combat is really smooth and responsive, especially for a mobile game. Fighting enemies feels meaningful, bosses are challenging, and you’ll always be mentally occupied even using the auto-combat system.

Ave & The Phantoms

During the game’s opening tutorial, you will receive “Ave’s Mirror”. This is a special device given to you by the strange ally Ave, which you fill up with energy to unlock bonus attributes and abilities. As you fill up the mirror, it levels up and unlocks more abilities, including healing, shields, movement speed, and stamina recovery.

On your journey you will also encounter phantoms, special characters that are often modeled after real historical figures. This is the game’s summoning/gacha feature. Each month, Noah’s Heart has a different theme and selects characters from that theme to offer storylines and new summons. Each Phantom can be leveled up, increasing its attributes. Over time, you can also bond with these characters, so watch out for the ones you’ve allied with!

While phantoms aren’t strictly playable characters, you can “possess” these characters to grant you additional abilities in battle. These include powerful abilities with cooldowns and even a more “ultimate” ability where the phantom briefly takes over the field. These characters can also join you as additional team members during story missions and in dungeons.

A huge, open world

Noah’s Heart offers a seamless open world with a map size of 64 million square meters in the game. For comparison, Minecraft worlds on PC are typically around 60 million square feet! This vast landscape spans the entire surface of a planet, meaning you can travel around the world in a straight line and end up where you started! It also means there’s virtually no end to the exploration you can do to uncover the many mysteries Noah’s heart holds.

Of course, such a large open world wouldn’t be interesting if there weren’t different areas to explore. Noah’s Heart features many biomes teeming with wildlife and treasure, from grasslands to icy mountains, from abandoned wilderness to medieval fortresses that will keep your adventures interesting. There is even an active weather system. On your journey you can go on a treasure hunt, defeat world bosses, solve mysterious puzzles and much more.

Additional functions

Noah’s Heart wouldn’t be complete without all the added dressings of an immersive RPG. You can count on experiencing a full crafting and gathering system if you enjoy crafting. This includes activities such as fishing, catching insects and cooking. Do you like dressing up? The game has fashion features that allow you to show off your unique style. You can even bond with pets and create your own living space to hang out with friends.

What are you waiting for?

Noah’s Heart is a highly anticipated MMORPG developed in Unreal Engine 4.
