Premier Inn opens new hotel in Brighton city centre

A NEW hotel being built in the city center will be a Premier Inn, it has been announced.

Developers demolished the former Sherry’s nightclub on West Street, Brighton, in 2020 to make way for a mixed-use development expected to be up to six stories high, including a 125-room hotel.

An opening date for the new Premier Inn has yet to be announced.

The hotel will be the brand’s 16th in Sussex and its second in the city – it already has one on North Street.

A spokesman for Whitbread, Premier Inn’s parent company, said: “The West Street Hotel is a new location for Premier Inn in Brighton and will not affect our existing hotels in the city, including the North Street commercial hotel.

“Brighton is a very popular destination for our customers, so we expect and hope that the new location will perform well once it opens and will be an excellent new addition to our existing network.”

The news comes a year after the chain included several locations in Sussex among its “target locations” for new hotel openings.

In addition to Brighton city centre, the list included Patcham, Hove/Shoreham, Lewes, Rye, Bognor, East Grinstead and Arundel.

Construction has yet to begin on the West Street site, which has hosted many of the city’s most popular clubs for more than a century.

Most notably, the site was home to Sherry’s Dance Hall, which dominated Brighton’s nightlife for almost three decades and was a popular destination for soldiers during the Second World War.

After Sherry’s closed, it became a roller rink and then a bingo hall before being demolished in the late 1960s.

It was converted into a nightclub and became the Pink Coconut, Paradox, Creation, Tru, Project and Hedkandi.

In a planning application submitted in 2018, developers from architectural firm Morgan Carn Partnership called the building soulless and said it was having “a negative impact on the character of the area”.

Premier Inn has over 800 hotels across the UK with over 76,000 rooms.
