Premier League player arrested on suspicion of rape has dropped an allegation

One of three charges against a Premier League player arrested on suspicion of rape has been dropped as his bail was extended until early October.

The unnamed player was arrested on July 4 in Barnet, north London, over allegations of rape against a woman in her 20s in June.

He was also arrested while in custody on allegations of raping another woman in April and June 2021.

The 29-year-old denies the allegations. In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said “no further action” would be taken in relation to the June 2021 offence.

“On July 4, an allegation of rape against a woman in her 20s was reported to police,” the statement said.

“The alleged rape was reported to have taken place in June 2022. On July 4, a 29-year-old man was arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody.

“While in custody, he was arrested on suspicion of two rapes allegedly committed in April and June 2021 against another woman in her 20s.

“No further action will be taken in relation to the June 2021 offence, but investigations into the remaining offenses are ongoing.

“The man was originally released on bail until a date in August, but his bail has since been extended until early October.”

In early July, the player’s Premier League club confirmed that they are not taking any action against the player at this time.

The club, also unnamed, said in a statement: “We are aware of the allegations which are currently the subject of a police investigation.

“We have confirmed that the player denies the allegations and is on police bail pending the outcome of his investigation. No charges have been filed and the player is able to carry out his professional obligations, including allowed travel.

“We take our obligations and responsibilities seriously and have followed our security policies and procedures.

“We will review this matter closely and will continue to review it as circumstances change.”
