Premier League players should no longer kneel before every game

Top players in England will no longer take a knee before every game in the competition, the Premier League has confirmed.

However, the anti-racism gesture will still be seen during the opening weekend of the 2022/23 season, which begins Friday night, and ahead of certain other games.

A statement from the league said:

“Premier League club captains have reiterated their commitment to combating racism and all forms of discrimination.

“The players have decided to use certain moments during the upcoming campaign to get on their knees to reinforce the message that racism has no place in football or in society. The Premier League supports the players’ choice and will, together with clubs, seize these opportunities to improve anti-racism messages as part of the league’s No Space for Racism action plan.”

The now well-known anti-racism gesture entered the football arena in this country in June 2020 with the post-Covid resumption of action when players used their platform to highlight and support the movement for racial equality.

Since then, some players have opted against it, with Wilf Zaha becoming the first in the Premier League to opt to stand before kick-off in 2021.

“I’ve said before that I feel like taking the knee is demeaning and stuff because my parents let me grow up that I should be proud to be black no matter what and I think we do should just stand up straight,” he said at the time.

England’s national teams also took their knees before games during this period.

Complementing the Premier League statement, the club captains said together: “We have decided to select key moments throughout the season to take a knee to underscore our unity against all forms of racism and in doing so we continue to show solidarity for one common cause . We remain resolutely committed to eradicating racial prejudice and building an inclusive society with respect and equal opportunity for all.” Premier League players should no longer kneel before every game
