President Michael D. Higgins’ wife has overshot the mark with the Ukraine letter

blank

Regardless of what one might think of its content, the principle of the Irish President’s partner sending a lengthy letter to a newspaper on a highly contentious foreign policy issue is deeply problematic.

One can only assume that such a letter would have the tacit support of President Higgins himself.

To resolve this unfortunate situation, which is embarrassing the office of President and the country, President Higgins must publicly distance himself from his wife’s letter, or take the more appropriate course of action and leave office.

War is the ultimate human failing – negotiate now

What a relief it is to see someone of Sabina Higgins’ build express what most of us are thinking. Peacemaking must begin immediately. War is man’s ultimate failure to behave responsibly.

All wars must end sooner or later.

Negotiation is the only tool in the box to achieve this goal.

Every country, including the EU and NATO and the US, is simply and insanely demanding that more arms be shipped to Ukraine, giving the false impression that planet earth wants Russia destroyed.

Not for the first time, Ms Higgins has shown admirable independence and bravery in the face of skewed public opinion and “acceptable” narrative.

Other voices calling for peace are Pope Francis and Claire Daly MEP. A more diverse group would be hard to imagine, but the sooner they are heard and listened to, the sooner this obscene war will end.

There is nothing to be gained by continued slaughter

I am writing in support of Sabina Higgins’ view that a negotiated peace will be the only way to end the cruel war in Ukraine. This is how wars always ended, save for the annihilation of one of the fighting sides. No sane person would want this, as the annihilation due to modern weaponry would spread far, far beyond the site of the war. There is nothing to be gained from continued slaughter – we here in Ireland know that all too well.

Just as Olens Zelenska, the wife of Ukraine’s President, is now on the world stage (despite not being elected) to seek powerful weapons and missiles, so too can Sabina Higgins (also not elected), our President’s wife, have her say on publish the way to peace.

Sabina Higgins has long been known as a peace activist. For she has typically chosen to follow her principles rather than follow through on the currently unspoken imperative in political Ireland of “thou shalt not blame Ukraine”.

Advice on the age problem of getting older

As I read John Daly’s interesting article on aging, jokes by popular comedians came to mind. George Burns noted that the Dead Sea was still alive in his youth and that on the ‘romantic’ front he spent all night thinking about what he used to do all night.

On a related subject, Bob Hope told us he was still chasing women well into his seventies, but only downhill. Allow me to close with some advice… never grow old, it will be your death!.

Nancy and Joe should be home with the grandkids

We nudged the bear and saw what happened. Now 82-year-old Nancy Pelosi plans to anger the Chinese. War on two fronts – Europe and the Pacific – should resonate, but apparently one learns nothing from history. Nancy and President Joe Biden would be better off playing at home with their grandkids.

Enjoy the delights of the sea but remember who’s boss

Last week was Water Safety Week on the beautiful Narin and Portnoo Beach. I congratulate the organizers of this important event that undoubtedly saves lives.

For over 40 years I have been addicted to the joy of swimming in the sea.

It offers moments that border on the spiritual. The physical and psychological benefits of a dip in the frigid Irish seas are unparalleled. There is a definite feeling of leaving all your troubles behind.

But remember to be careful; The ocean is the boss.
